Baptism
“Let the little children come to me . . . for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.”
At Southminster we offer the Sacrament of Baptism for all ages from newborns to senior citizens! We celebrate baptism for adults who profess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and for children whose parents profess that same faith in Jesus Christ.
Baptism is the sign and seal of God’s grace that has been at work in our lives since before we were born. The Book of Order of our denomination (Presbyterian Church, USA) teaches that “baptism signifies the faithfulness of God, the washing away of sin, rebirth, putting on the fresh garment of Christ, and adoption into the covenant family of the church.”
The baptism of children witnesses to the amazing gift of God’s love that claims us even before we are able to respond in faith. Except in extraordinary circumstances, baptism occurs in worship so that the congregation, on behalf of the whole church, can joyfully promise to nurture our baptized children in the Christian life.
